Far beyond the red Christmas stocking lies the Land of Gingerbread, where the hills are soft and nicely baked, the fields taste of chocolate and the clouds in the sky are made of sugar foam. In the south of this land lies Gingerbread Village, and in this village lives a gingerbread girl by the name of Lisa. Jana Bauer, born in 1975, graduated in dramatic arts from the Academy for theater, radio, film and TV in Ljubljana, where she now lives with her husband and a five-month old baby Martin. As a child, Jana was determined to grow up into a Robin Hood, with her own band of robbers. Eventually she settled for writing children's books instead. Her first book, Izginjevalec čarovnic (The Vanisher of Witches), was nominated for the Best Children's Book of the Year Award, her second, Čarobna beseda (The Magic Word), is a story of intrigue and adventure in Neverneverland, her third, V deželi medenjakov (In the Land of Gingerbread) was the first in the series Forget-Me-Nots, which Jana edits. For Sodobnost International, a small but distinguished publishing house, she also edits Izmenjave / Exchanges, a series of world anthologies of short stories.

Andrej Rozman – Roza, born in 1955 in Ljubljana, is a poet, author, playwright and actor. He writes comic poems, parodies, stories and comedy plays for children and adults. In 1978 he founded (together with friends) a street theater group Predrazpadom (Beforefallingapart), as well as organizing an international street theater festival in Ljubljana. He acts in his own plays alone or as part of a small group of actors called Rozinteater. His latest book of poems for adults, Tih bot dedi (Shut up grandad) was a bestseller; one of the poems was even read out loud during a session of the Slovene parliament. For his work he has received many distinguished awards.

Desa Muck, born in 1955 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is a writer and actress, best known for her stories, novels and radio plays for children, as well as for her bestselling books for adults. Recently she began to write successful comedies for theater. She has published more than 60 books and appeared in a number of films and television shows. She is by far the most widely read Slovenian children's author. She has worked as a nursery school teacher, a draughtsman and a carer of mentally retarded children. She has three daughters.

Tatjana Kokalj, born in Moravče in 1956, is a writer and a primary school teacher. She writes for young readers. Some of her most famous books are Miška in veter (Little mouse and the wind), Abeceda na potepu (Vagabond ABC), Cvetkova gmajnica (Cvetko's grove), Vremenske pravljice (The weather stories), Pravljice iz mišje luknje (Stories from the mouse hole). She published a book series Mulci na kvadrat (Squared lads). Teenagers love to read her crime novel Kamen v žepu (Stone in a pocket). Tatjana unveils relationships between kids and teenagers, and reflects on their troubles, which are mostly solved in humorous ways. She collaborates in a textbook writing team and prepares other didactic material for primary schools. In her home village Dob, she is surrounded with her family that in the evenings regularly joins her with books in their laps.

Evald Flisar is an award-winning novelist, short story writer, playwright, essayist and editor of the oldest Slovenian literary journal Sodobnost, published since 1933. He read compara¬tive literature at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and English in London, where he spent 17 years of his life, editing (among other things) en encyclopaedia of science and writing radio plays for the the BBC. From 1995 to 2002 he was president of the Slovene Writers' Association. His work has been translated into 24 languages, including Icelandic, Malay, Marathi, Hindi, Greek, Bengali and Arabic. He has travelled in over eighty countries and held public readings in many parts of the world. Seven of Flisar's stage plays (Collected Plays, 1) have recently been published by Texture Press in New York. His other books available in the U. S. are My Father's Dreams (a novel) and Tales of Wandering (short stories), both published by Texture Press.

Majda Koren:Luisa from Outer Space
One day, a strange flying potato lands on the lawn right in front of Jure's nose. It turns out that the potato is in fact a spaceship. Out of it steps Luisa, a cretaure from the planet Solanum Tuberosum. Luisa has to write a report about life on Earth, so Jure invites her on a sightseeing tour of his home town, Ljubljana. They hop on a bus and Luisa can hardly believe her eyes as they take a walk through the old part of town. Jure, on the other hand, is filled with wonder as Luisa tells him about her planet. Majda Koren was born in 1960 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. She is a prolific children's writer and a scriptwriter for children's television programmes. She works as an elementary school teacher in Ljubljana. She has written many stories and educational books for young readers, as well as numerous books on pedagogics. She is also the author of some well-known children's radio plays. Her latest hobby is editing an online children's review called Župca (Soup), www.zupca.net. For her illustrated book Eva in kozel (Eve and the Goat), Majda received večernica, the most important national prize for children's literature. Lojza iz vesolja / Luisa from Outer Space, published in the series Spominčice / Forget-me-nots, is her latest book.

Peter Svetina: Antonov cirkus / Anton's Circus
Last century, the twenties: Ljubljana's fair is livelier than ever. But the tent of Anton's circus is empty! A group of acrobatic fleas, the show's main attraction, has left the circus. The director Anton Bon and his companion, Leopold the lion, find themselves in great trouble. Anton is hopelessly trying to think of a solution. Finally, he decides to visit a library. But instead of books, full of captivating stories, he runs into three book-eating rats and a cat that would like to eat the rats. Eventualy, the curious company is joined by Leopold the lion, and before they know it, they can offer the audience the most thrilling performance – a show that becomes so successful that even the group of fleas decides to return.

Peter Svetina was born in 1970 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He first studied medicine but later switched to Slovenian language and literature. He obtained his degree (and later a Ph.D) at the University of Ljubljana. He enjoys travelling and leafing through old dusty books. Most of all, he enjoys writing for young readers: tales, poetry, detective stories, even puppet-shows. For his poetry book Kavarna v prvem nadstropju (Coffee-house on The First Floor) he was awarded a prize for the best first book. He is a lecturer in Slovenian literature at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. He is also the author of many theoretical texts and co-author of study books for elementary school.
